7 Smart Ways to Get Rid of Spider Infestations

7 Smart Ways to Get Rid of Spider Infestations

Spiders can be harmless or poisonous. If you are tired of finding spiders in your home and suspect you have spider infestations, here are seven smart ways to tackle the problem!

Why Do Spiders Increase at the End of Summer?

During the autumn and winter months, you have probably noticed there’s an increase in activity of a wide variety of spider species. You are not alone if you are not fond of these creepy crawlies! Spider infestations often occur during rainy months or when winter arrives.

One reason you could find many spiders is that male spiders go hunting for a mate. You can find spiders hiding anywhere from the shower to cracks in your walls. If you are looking at ways of keeping spiders at bay, then these seven hacks will help you with your spider infestation.

1. Declutter.

Decluttering your home is a smart way to keep bugs in check.

Decluttering is a smart move towards keeping many bugs in check. By cutting down on clutter, you will give spiders little opportunity to find those hiding places. You can also limit their food sources.

You need to keep your food sources covered. By avoiding other pests, spiders will have a smaller supply of food. Ensure you sweep your floor and wipe countertops. This will discourage insects from being drawn to food sources.

When you vacuum frequently, it will help keep webs and spider eggs sacs in check. You can avoid spider bites and infestations with a clean environment.

2. Seal Wall Cracks.

Prevention is better than cure. Time to seal those wall cracks!

It is time for you to seal the cracks in your home. This is a smart move to keep spiders out and the warm air in during chilly winter months.

The simple action of sealing your cracks is easy and inexpensive. This is one of the most effective methods of keeping myriad bugs and the common house spider in check. Fewer crawl spaces mean fewer bugs and spiders.

You need to keep an eye out for spider infestations in your bathroom, kitchen, and any other damp areas. This is where they love to congregate.

3. Keep Your Garden Tidy.

Want fewer spiders? Clear the forest around your home.

You may have noticed that spiders love living in lush vegetation, under woodpiles, in compost heaps, and just about anywhere in your garden. It is time for you to take action.

Keep everything tidy in your garden. Clear those woodpiles away and sweep up any dead leaves. You will need to cut everything back during winter. Not only will this encourage fresh growth in your spring garden, but it is also a sure-fire way of ridding your environment of all kinds of bugs and spiders.

4. Regularly Spray Skirting & Corners.

Regular spraying of skirting boards and corners can form part of an effective method of getting rid of dangerous spiders.

By spraying your skirting boards and corners of your home, spider activity will be less. Another spot where spiders like to hide in your home is under windowsills and in the corners of outbuildings.

Remember to keep dark spaces like storage boxes and basements spider-free. These spaces in your home are especially attractive to dangerous Black Widow Spiders.

5. Switch Off Lights.

The insects spiders feast on are attracted to bright lights.

When you leave lights on, remember that your resident arachnid family is not attracted to the light. The insects they feast on are, though. Less light is less insect activity and fewer arachnids!

Use sensor lights and switch your lights off wherever possible to discourage insect activity. Dark environments will discourage arachnids in your space.

6. Try Natural Oils.

Have you ever tried mint and natural oils to discourage arachnids?

You might discover that using natural oils and nuts will send spiders on their way. Did you know that spiders hate the smell of tea tree oil, citrus, eucalyptus oil, and drops of peppermint?

To discourage spider activity, fill a spray bottle with water and add a few drops of essential oils. Spray all the nooks and crannies in the home.

Spiders dislike the smell of peppermint. Not only do spiders dislike drops of peppermint, they also dislike all types of nuts and oranges. It is worth it to try these natural remedies to good effect in your home.

7. Call in the Experts.

You can get better, safer results by calling in the experts

It might be advisable for you to use professional pest control experts to assist. If you are experiencing uncontrollable spider infestations, this option is safer. You won’t need to worry about spider webs, spider bites, and the species of spiders in your home.

Large numbers of indoor or outside spiders could be a clear sign of other pest infestations in and around your home. Remember that insects attract spiders and are usually food for spiders.

A pest control professional knows how to get rid of all types of spiders and any other bug infestations. DIY spider destruction methods may not always be effective or safe.

Find Out How Useful Spiders Can Be

Did you know we need spiders for the environment to thrive? Spiders mostly eat insects. They help keep the insect population in check.

  • All spiders are predators. Because of their great abundance, they are important in controlling insects for food growers across the globe.
  • Spiders have been used to control insects in apple orchards in Israel. They have also played a role in keeping insects at bay in rice fields in China.
  • Spiders feed on insects in rice fields in South America, and various insects in crop fields in North America.
  • Did you know spiders are especially useful in the control of malaria-carrying mosquitoes? This is especially important because these vectors carry viruses, including malaria, that kill more humans than any other animal!
  • Doing away with chemicals in a modern world and using natural predators such as a certain type of spider is fast gaining popularity.
