There are about 20,000 different species of bees in the world. The sharp decline of honeybee populations continues to this day, researchers say. According to experts, the continued critical loss in managed honeybee populations is unsustainable.  

Honeybees are essential for the pollination of flowers, fruits, and vegetables. This makes honeybees one of the most important agricultural commodities. Much of the produce found in grocery stores is pollinated by millions of honey bees.  

In spite of their critical importance, honeybee farmers report losing entire hives in a growing downtrend. Over the past 15 years, bee colonies have been disappearing in what is termed the colony collapse disorder by National Geographic. Data shows bee populations dwindling more and more at an alarming rate each year.  

Why are honey bee populations are declining? 

The largest contributor to the decline of bee health is the varroa mite, a parasite that invades hives and spreads diseases. Other reasons for the loss in the population are loss of habitat and poor management practices.  

What should I do if there is a beehive on my property? 

To save the bee population, please contact a beekeeper who can remove the hive without exterminating the bees, you can also contact Mostert Pest Control Services, we will be able to advise. Beekeepers use smoke to calm bees when they are collecting honey or relocating a hive. Do not exterminate the bees.
